"Tell more teens![this information about sexually transmitted diseases]"

Teen Clinic Patient

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS

Issue:

One out of four teens who have sex will get a sexually transmitted infection. Teens often are not aware how important it is that they prevent such diseases because of the damage they can do to their health and well-being as well as the health and well-being of others.

Project:

Create a multi-media presentation running on a computer that clearly explains the need to avoid sexually transmitted infections including the fact that certain kinds have no symptoms and that some cannot be cured. Link that presentation to up to three appropriate websites including one on condom use. Make sure that the intervention takes no more than the average 15 minutes waiting time in a teen clinic.

Result:

Teens who were given the intervention during a clinic visit, when contrasted with those who were not, at their next clinic visit three or more months later were:

  • More knowledge about spread of sexually transmitted infections
  • More knowledgeable about consequences of such infections
  • More likely to always use a condom (58% vs. 38% comparison group)
