"Parents must remember that the goal of the media is to make money - not to give young people good advice on how to handle their sexual feelings and behaviors."

Media Madness for Parents of Young Teens

PARENTS AND SEX IN THE MEDIA

Issue:

Parents are frustrated because they feel that the media undermines many of the values they are trying to teach their children and that sex in the media leads young people to experimentation.

Project:

Create an educational series to enable parents to mentor their children in relation to sexual content in the media. The goal is to help parents better understand the techniques the media uses and help their children be less influenced by those techniques.

Result:

Parents are being taught to:

  • Be aware of how the media operates
  • More effectively monitor how their children engage with the media
  • Discuss media sexual content with their children
  • Teach media resistance skills to their children
  • Become proactive in efforts to change the media
