"It's a fact. Young people will make more mistakes out of misinformation and ignorance than from sexual knowledge and awareness."

Media Madness Parent Series

BODY WORKS

Issue:

Young people need facts about why and how their bodies change in size and function as they become sexually mature. However, because of all the myths teens hear from other teens about sex, young people may use misinformation to make decisions as often as they do correct information.

Project:

Create a multi-media presentation running on a computer that clearly explains changes in bodies and sexual functioning that occur as a result of puberty. Highlight the importance of learning to manage sexual feelings and desires caused by these bodily changes. Make sure that the intervention takes no more than the average 15 minutes waiting time in a teen clinic.

Result:

Girls and boys are being given an opportunity to learn about sexual changes in their own and each other’s bodies plus gain reassurance about the normalcy of these changes. Correct facts enable teens to be less vulnerable to pressures from peers and others that are based on myths or distortions of reality.
